For years fir bark has been a staple in orchid mixes. Orchid bark is a blend of small and medium sized fir bark chunks especially suited to orchids. Fir bark breaks down more quickly in wet humid environments and as it breaks down it uses nitrogen. Fertilizer with a higher nitrogen component is required for fir bark mixes. Fir bark comes from the bark of Douglas Fir. Extra Small Fir Bark, Small Fir Bark,, Medium Fir Bark and Large Fir Bark are also available. An exceptional alternative to orchid bark is aged Medium Monterey Pine Bark.
